A Kitchen Built to Belong
Before After

The original kitchen design in this home carried the weight of its era. It was a dark, outdated space with flat-front oak cabinets in honey tones, dark granite countertops, and a wallpaper border running the room’s perimeter. The layout also under-utilized the square footage, making the space feel closed off and cramped. It had good square footage and a window over the sink offering natural light, but it needed a complete reset to help the kitchen achieve its full potential.
The SKB team worked closely with the homeowners to take the space down to its bones and rebuild it around how the family actually lives. We opened up the entire layout and created a kitchen that multiple people could work in at the same time, improving the flow, space, and accessibility. The result is a kitchen that reimagines the heart of the home but that feels natural and fits the home.
We started the transformation by removing the existing peninsula and bulkheads in the kitchen, which allowed us to take the cabinets to the ceiling. This required our team to complete a lot of work to reroute all plumbing that had been in the bulkheads, but it was worth it for the result! The change allowed more light in the kitchen, which brightened up the entire space and made it feel more welcoming. A new picture window over the sink floods the space with even more natural light than the original. We also replaced the exterior sliding door, which was a detail that made a surprising difference in the room.
Reimagining the Heart of the Home
The brightness of the new kitchen design meant we could stick with the rich, dark wood tones that the client loves. The perimeter of the kitchen features Koch Cabinets Beechwood with Briarwood stain, accented by Radiant Quartz countertops in Portico Cream that help to lighten the kitchen’s color scheme. It also features antique pewter hardware throughout, that is timeless and ties the entire design together.
The island and hutch provide contrast in Maple Pearl, and the entire cabinet design has a high-end, furniture-like look. The custom built-in hutch with glass front upper cabinets and a lit display niche makes visitors ask, “Was that always there?” This sums up the goal of this kitchen design – a fresh look and enhanced functionality, but in a design that integrates so naturally into the home that it feels like it was always meant to look this way.
