The Solstice Team

Meet Our Founders

Derek and Scott are the owners of Solstice Kitchen and Bath, where Derek is the lead designer and Scott manages all project installations. They each bring 20 years of experience in the building and remodeling industry, plus a love of innovative design and craftsmanship. Their long-lasting friendship and professional partnership grew from working together in the construction industry in Baltimore for over 5 years where their understanding of how to get the best results from a home remodel evolved. This led them to establish their own company where they could own the end-to-end design and remodeling process.

Derek Mahoney

OWNER, LEAD DESIGNER

Derek grew up as a local resident in Bowie and graduated from DeMatha Catholic High School in 1994. He then went to Virginia Tech and graduated in 1999 with a major in environmental resource management and a minor in chemistry. His introduction to the construction and building industry came when he worked with a local Annapolis builder from 2001–2002. This builder constructed houses from the ground up and completed major home additions in the Annapolis area, giving Derek a wide range of experience in home building, carpentry, and structural work. From there he moved to Baltimore, where he met Scott and they started working together in gutting and rebuilding homes. Like Scott, Derek worked in construction ripping out and rehabbing Baltimore townhomes for about 3 years. MORE

He then branched out into kitchen installations and finish carpentry, further honing his experience and craftsman’s skills. He also did all the tile work for the bathrooms and kitchens in these homes. Derek worked at the ground level doing everything from tearing down walls to fine details, where he gained an understanding of and experience with everything required to successfully complete a remodeling project. From his unique vantage point working on site every day, he could see first-hand the problem with designs that didn’t fully address issues in the home or did not maximize the value of the space. Derek began troubleshooting these designs onsite directly with the homeowners, where he saw first-hand the importance of truly listening to what the customer needs and wants. He learned that by working with the customer in this collaborative way, he could help the homeowners reimagine their space through a design customized to their requirements. With this shared vision for successful design and remodeling, Derek and Scott’s business partnership evolved into the foundation of Solstice Kitchen and Bath.

Scott Dell

OWNER, LEAD FOR INSTALLATION AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Scott’s path to a career in home design and remodeling began several years after graduating from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Science in 1999. In 2002 he started working in general construction and carpentry in Baltimore. His scope incorporated full gutting and rebuilding of row homes. With three years’ experience in construction under his belt, Scott’s role evolved to specialize in kitchen cabinetry installation, hardwood flooring installation, and finish carpentry. After working on everything from knocking down walls to additions to finish carpentry work, Scott realized he could provide a better service by owning the entire design and remodeling process end-to-end. In a work environment where every stage of the process was managed separately by different individuals, he was inspired to see a better way to successfully design and implement a project. MORE

By working on site every day, he gained valuable insights into what works in a design and what does not. His experience enabled him to recognize what causes issues, and to ensure all elements of a project are coordinated to achieve the best results for a client. Scott recognized an opportunity to correct these issues and to do better for his clients by controlling the end-to-end process. Out of this insight and experience the concept for Solstice Kitchen and Bath was born.
