A free kitchen design tool is a good first move for most homeowners. It costs nothing, it takes an evening, and it turns a vague idea into something you can point at across the table. What it can’t tell you is whether the plan is buildable. The software has no idea where your drain line runs, which wall carries load, or what sizes your cabinet supplier makes. Those answers come from a measured plan. So sketch freely. Then get the room measured before a single dollar moves.

Free Tools Win on Speed and Early Ideas

The best thing about designing your own kitchen online is that you stop arguing in the abstract. You can see whether a peninsula reads as open or closed. You can push the sink under the window and find out you hate it there. You can test two cabinet colors in ten seconds instead of two weekends.

These tools also answer one honest spatial question: does the footprint have room for what you want? If the walkway around your drawn island collapses to fourteen inches, the software has told you something true, even when the numbers aren’t exact. That’s the same reality check behind whether the room can carry a kitchen island before you fall in love with one.

So use it. Bring the screenshots to your first meeting. A designer would rather start from your rough idea than from a blank page, because the rough idea shows them what you want the room to do.

Measured Plans Win on Everything Behind the Drywall

Here’s where free software goes quiet. It draws walls as lines. It doesn’t know that the wall behind your range carries the plumbing stack, or that the header over your proposed opening has to hold up the second floor. Move a sink four feet in a planner and it costs nothing. Move it four feet in a house and you’re rerouting drain and vent lines under slope rules that don’t negotiate.

The wall you want gone works the same way. Whether it can come out, and what it costs when it does, depends entirely on what it’s holding up. That’s a framing question rather than a design one, and it decides whether taking out the wall between the kitchen and the next room runs a few thousand dollars or several times that.

Ventilation is the quiet one. A planner will let you drop a range hood anywhere you point, because on screen a hood is just a shape above a cooktop. In the house it needs a duct path to the outside. Move the range to an interior wall or an island and that path gets long, or it has to climb through a ceiling and across a joist bay, and sometimes it can’t get there at all without giving up cabinet space you were counting on.

The age of the house matters too, and no planner ever asks for it. In a home built before 1978, the painted surfaces you’re about to disturb may contain lead, and federal rules require the firm doing that work to be certified for it. The EPA’s renovation and repair program spells out exactly which projects it covers.

A finished plan gets specific in ways a rendering never does. Ours mark where every outlet lands, down to the USB outlets people forget about until the island is already set. They name the cabinet line, the door style, and separate finishes for base cabinets versus wall and tall cabinets. They call out where the vents move to when a wall comes down.

None of that shows up in a rendering. All of it shows up in a bid.

Cabinet Sizes Don’t Come in the Increments You Drew

Online planners let you drag a cabinet to any width you like. Real cabinets don’t work that way. They arrive in fixed widths, usually in three inch steps, and the leftover space gets covered by filler strips and scribe molding that a free tool won’t draw for you.

So a run that measures perfectly on screen can land an inch and a half short in the room. That gap has to go somewhere. Where it goes, and whether anyone ever notices it, is a decision someone should make on purpose instead of discovering on install day.

Corners are where this shows up worst. A free tool will happily butt two cabinet runs together at a right angle and call it done. A real corner needs a lazy Susan, a blind corner unit, or a deliberate dead space, and each one eats a different amount of wall. Get that wrong on paper and the run on the far side of the corner shifts, which moves your sink, which moves your plumbing.

Available sizes also shift with the line you’re buying. Stock, semi-custom, and custom cabinets don’t share the same widths, depths, or modification options, which is why one layout can be simple in one line and impossible in another.

Clearance Is the Number Most Free Plans Get Wrong

Aisle width is the most common thing a free layout gets wrong, because the software will happily let you draw a thirty inch walkway between an island and a run of base cabinets. Then the dishwasher door opens and the aisle disappears.

There’s a published benchmark worth knowing. The federal accessibility standard for kitchens sets clearance between opposing base cabinets, countertops, appliances, or walls at 40 inches minimum in a pass through work area, and 60 inches in a U-shaped kitchen. A private home isn’t bound by it. But it’s the clearest floor anyone publishes, and an aisle drawn under it will feel wrong the first week you cook in it.

Door swings make it worse. A dishwasher door, an oven door, and a refrigerator door all need room to open without blocking the path someone else is walking. Free tools draw every box closed.

Landing space is the other one nobody draws. You need counter beside the range to set a hot pan down, counter beside the refrigerator to put the groceries, and counter on at least one side of the sink. A layout can hit every clearance number and still leave you with nowhere to put anything down. That’s the difference between a kitchen that measures fine and a kitchen that works.

Which Path Fits Where You Are Right Now

Stay with the free tool if you’re six months out, still deciding whether a wall should move, and mostly trying to get everyone in the house pointed the same direction. Nothing is at risk yet. The exercise is worth more than it costs.

Get the room measured if you’re pricing the job, ordering anything, or counting on moving plumbing or squeezing in an island where the space is tight. Those are the choices that turn expensive after demolition starts.

Get measured sooner if the house is older, the walls are out of square, or somebody remodeled before you. Old work hides surprises, and a plan built on assumed dimensions inherits every one of them.

The honest tradeoff is time and commitment. A free planner hands you something in an evening. A measured plan takes an appointment, a site visit, and a designer’s hours, and it will tell you no about things you were excited about.

It narrows the field, too. Once the room is measured and the cabinet line is chosen, your options shrink to what fits and what gets manufactured. Some people find that clarifying. Others find it deflating, especially when a favorite idea turns out to need a wall moved.
