No. The sink can go wherever the plumbing can reach, including an island, a side wall, or a corner. Putting it under the window is a convention, not a requirement. What makes the decision feel forced is that the window is already there, it can’t be nudged six inches to suit a cabinet, and everything else on that wall has to be drawn around it. So the useful question isn’t whether the sink belongs under the window. It’s what keeping that window is going to cost you everywhere else in the room.
Homeowners usually discover the answer during cabinet layout, which is late. The wall that holds a window can’t carry upper cabinets across the opening, can’t take a range and hood, and puts a hard ceiling on the backsplash. Settle the window in the first design meeting and you spend the rest of the project making choices. Leave it open and you spend the project making concessions.
Why Did the Sink End Up Under the Window in the First Place?
Two reasons, and only one of them is about the view. Drain and vent lines are simplest to run down an exterior wall, so that wall got the plumbing. And washing up is the task you stand at longest, so the builder gave it the daylight. The window came first. The sink followed the pipes.

What Does the Window Actually Decide in the Layout?
Four things, and all of them are expensive to change once cabinets are ordered: where wall cabinets can run, whether the range can sit on that wall, how tall the backsplash finishes, and how usable the window hardware is from across a counter. The window is a fixed point on the drawing. Everything on that wall gets arranged around it.
The storage loss is the one people underestimate. A four-foot window over the sink removes roughly four feet of upper cabinets, which is a whole shelf run of everyday dishes. That storage has to reappear somewhere, and the honest options are drawers below, a tall pantry cabinet elsewhere, or a wall you were planning to leave open. It’s the same arithmetic as where the storage goes when a wall opens up, just on a smaller scale.
The range is the second constraint, and it’s close to absolute. A hood can’t hang in front of a window, and putting burners under an operable sash means reaching across heat to open it and hanging fabric near a flame. Be clear about the trade. A skylight lights the room, not the task, and it lights it from a direction that puts your own shadow on the counter when you stand at the sink. It brings heat in summer, it needs an attic chase if the ceiling isn’t directly under the roof, and it gives you no view and no ventilation unless you pay for an operable unit. A solar tube is the smaller, cheaper version: less heat, a much smaller hole in the roof, no view at all.
